10 videos in 10 minutes? Youth officer Kim doesn’t shy away from it. She has a TikTok account with no less than 633,000 followers and an Instagram account with 54,000 followers. With her social media accounts and her viral videos, she knows how to build bridges between the police and the youth in the Netherlands. She finds creating stories on social media very easy, as long as she can be and remain herself. “Via my DMs, I am not only officer Kim, but also a friendly listener who sends a heart back.”

In this podcast , recorded live during Frankwatching’s Social Today Event , I speak with TikTok agent Kim van der Weij about her career with the police and the use of social media. In the rapidly evolving world of social media, where TikTok rules the younger generations, Kim’s unique approach is unconventional. And undeniably effective – she uses  overseas data TikTok to bridge the gap between the police and the youth.

Reaching the youth

It’s not just a dance or a trend or a challenge here and there. Kim’s TikTok adventures tell stories, answer questions, and convey important messages. And they show the humanity behind the uniform. She understands that to reach youth, you have to communicate in a way that resonates with them. That means sharing content that goes beyond the usual “don’t do this” messages. Dealing with hundreds of responses
In her approach to criticism, Kim remains professional and empathetic. She is open to conversations, even with critics.
